Ian Gooding

Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Gooding graduated from Cambridge University in 1994.  His postgraduate training was in the East of England and then as a registrar in London.  His special interests include hepatobiliary medicine, ERCP and interventional endoscopy in which he trained at Hammersmith and Chelsea & Westminster Hospitals.  He also has an interest in clinical nutrition.  He teaches medical students and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London Medical School. Mary McStay

Mary McStay

Consultant gastroenterologist

Dr McStay graduated from Cambridge University in 1991 and St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1994. She completed additional training as part of the North East Thames rotation in gastroenterology, which included placements at the Royal London, Royal Free, Homerton Hospital, Southend Hospital and Newham Hospital.

In addition, Dr McStay spent two years studying the role of peptide growth factors in primary liver tumours and neuroendocrine tumours at the Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit at the Royal Free Hospital. Her professional qualifications include a Master of the arts degree (MA), Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and a Doctorate of Medicine (MD), which she was awarded in 2005.

Dr McStay spent six years working as a consultant gastroenterologist at Southend Hospital before joining the Colchester team in 2011. She has special interests in capsule endoscopy, managing patients with neuroendocrine tumours and using colonoscopy to screen for bowel cancer.

Simon Ralphs

Simon Ralphs

Consultant Gastroenterologist

Dr. Simon Ralphs graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1999. He began training in gastroenterology at St. Mark’s hospital in 2004 and joined the North West London Training programme in 2008 working at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital and Charing Cross amongst others. His specialist interests include nutrition, the role of the gut microbiota in intestinal disease and therapeutic colonoscopy. He has been a consultant at Colchester hospital since 2014 and is the current Clinical Lead for Endoscopy and the Clinical Director of the North East Essex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Achuth Shenoy

Achuth Shenoy

Consultant physician and gastroenterologist

Dr Shenoy joined Colchester Hospital in 2008 and specialises in inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancer, endoscopy, liver disease, nutrition and medical education.

Dr Shenoy qualified from Mangalore University in India in 1989 and completed further training at Bangalore University before undertaking postgraduate training in the UK. His professional qualifications include Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Diplomate of National Board (DNB) awarded in India, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, London (FRCP). He also holds a Diploma in Medical Education (Cardiff University) and is an honorary senior lecturer at the Queen Mary University in London. He is also the principal investigator for several research projects led by the National Institute of Health Research.

Outside of work, Dr Shenoy enjoys playing badminton and an Indian musical instrument called the Tabla, as well as collecting stamps and coins.
